PSHCE and SMSC
PSHCE (Personal, Social, Health and Citizenship Education) is an important part of our school’s curriculum, and all subjects consider opportunities to develop students’ understanding of themselves, others, British values and the world around them. PSHCE informs many aspects of school life including assemblies, and together with Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural issues and our own school values, contributes to students’ personal development, enabling them to grow into responsible young people.
In Years 7 and 8, students have a dedicated PSCHE lesson once a fortnight, in which they learn to develop themselves both as effective learners and as citizens in a culturally diverse country. These lessons include age appropriate content.
In Year 9, students have a dedicated PSHCE lesson once a fortnight, covering a variety of topics mainly focusing on Relationships, Sex and Health Education.
Relationships, Sex and Health Education
It is a statutory obligation for all schools to ensure they are teaching Relationships, Sex and Health Education. All content relating to relationships and sex will be age appropriate and delivered sensitively. The key themes are as follows: families, respectful relationships and friendships, online safety and sexual health. In addition, Health Education covers mental health, physical wellbeing, drugs and addiction, hygiene, first aid and puberty. These topics will be taught across the curriculum through PSHCE and the Humanities, Science, Food Tech, Physical Education, Computing and discrete PSHCE lessons in Year 9. High quality, age-appropriate teaching of these subjects will help prepare our students for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of adult life, enabling them to make well-informed, positive choices for themselves.

Extra-curricular activities and educational visits
Throughout the year, many educational visits are offered to students including theatre visits, museum and gallery trips. We are committed to providing students with a wide choice of extracurricular activities and students are encouraged to sign up for clubs and activities that take place both during social times and after school. These all make a significant contribution to the spiritual, moral, social and cultural development of students.
