Veteran joins us for Remembrance

Staff and students joined together to mark the Armistice Day and remember those who have died in war and conflict around the world.

Students created hand-made clay poppy tea light holders in art lessons and painted them ahead of November 11 so they could be lit for Remembrance.

Royal Sussex Regiment veteran and Royal British Legion member Tom Dempsy attended the school to take part in the act of Remembrance. Lead teacher of the Arts, Mrs Lyndsey Harkness has collaborated with the local RBL branch since the school first opened in 2018.

“It is so great to be able to spend time here. Many local children had family who fought in the War. It has been a pleasure to come in and run a service, especially during lockdown,” said Mr Dempsy.

Students have been learning about the Armistice  and its significance in a variety of subjects, with various activities, assemblies and poetry.

“I believe it is an important date in the calendar so that students can be given time to reflect and remember. It is a shame that the students were unable to attend the Merstham Memorial this year, but I am pleased that we marked the date within the school community,” said Mrs Harkness.

Taking the time as a school community to remember those who have fallen in wars and the sacrifice those before us have made is an important part of our education.
